Az Samad is a full-time composer-performer who focuses on writing original acoustic guitar music. Coming from a classical guitar background laid the foundation for his unique sound that is a blend of jazz, latin, pop and new age. After completing his first degree in music, he studied with Eric Roche, an influential acoustic fingerstyle guitarist from the UK. Attending two of Eric's Residential Guitar Workshops in 2003 and 2004 proved valuable as it led Az into new directions in his music. Being nominated for the first Cameronian Arts Award for best solo performance encouraged him to further explore his solo guitar excursions.

The culmination of this is "Acoustic Gestures", an independently produced CD featuring 12 of his original compositions for solo acoustic guitar. Currently he is studying under scholarship at the world famous Berklee College Of Music, Boston, USA in the dual-major degree program, majoring in Jazz Composition and Performance (Guitar). In his first semester, he studied under Garrison Fewell, a respected jazz guitarist who previous mentors have included the likes of Jim Hall and Pat Martino.

ESP
ESP Guitars are coveted by axemen with hard rocking sensibilities who don't fit into the traditional mould – to the rockers and metal merchants, ESPs are like Ferraris … expensive but performance packed. Of course, there's the LTD line for those that don't quite have the moolah for an ESP, but, if you do, you'll be glad to know the local distributor has brought in some fine and proper ESP electrics to titillate and tease fans.
ESP'S FINEST: The USA Eclipse-II

There's, to start with, the USA Eclipse-II VBK, which has a mahogany body and set-in neck with custom binding, maple body top, ebony fingerboard, Sperzel locking tuners, Gotoh Tune-matic bridge and EMG pickups.

M II Urban Camo

Then, there's the neck-through M-II Urban Camo, with alder body, maple neck, ebony fingerboard with white binding, original Floyd Rose bridge, Gotoh Deluxe tuners and EMG pickups … in cool camouflage finish.

SV Standard WH

Also available here now are the Eclipse-I CTM (PL), SV-Standard (Black and White) and Horizon NT.
---------------------------------------------
LTD B-254

Take the B-254, for example. This four-stringer vaunts an agathis body capped with a slab of flame maple. Besides being a neck-thru design, the neck on this bass is a five-piece affair, with timber complement including maple, walnut and rosewood (also the choice for the fretboard).
---------------------------------------------
LTD B-255

Four strings not quite enough? Then the five-string B-255 should do quite nicely. This beast features identical construction traits but the pickups are of the EMG 40HZ variety.
---------------------------------------------
ESP/LTD B-254 electric bass

The instrument in question is the ESP/LTD B-254 four-string electric bass. For starters, it's a neck-through design, which tells you this is not your average, modular axe. Scale length is 34-inch, and the body is made of agathis with a flame maple top (another indication that this isn't some cheap knock-off bass), finished in amber sunburst. The body wings are closely matched, certainly closer than I've seen in more expensive instruments, and the headstock finish reflects the general theme.

ESP/LTD VIPER-104

ESP/LTD, not surprisingly for a manufacturer that knows everything about being cool and hip with the rock/metal crowd, has a series of electric guitars and basses that bear the Viper label. Again, you won't be surprised to find that these instruments don't traverse well-trodden trails but instead, slither through the less travelled undergrowth.

This week, we attempt to pin down the entry-level bass from the range, the Viper-104. It's the closest we'll get to a Jeff Corwin feat here!

ESP/LTD B-2005

Black Grover tuners and an ESP BB604 bridge (a chunky piece of work) take care of the hardware part.

The electronics include two EMG 35-DC/P4 active pickups (humbuckers) that are linked to an EMG B64 active preamp; this in turn drives the three-band EQ section. Master volume and pickup balance knobs complete the control section of the bass. The five black control knobs are rather dull fare; I would have liked something more striking, given that the B-2005 is a special edition instrument.

Admira
Admira Model 580 classical

Are there solutions to this problem? Of course, there are. It may not be a new concept but Spanish guitar maker Admira is addressing the issue with much exuberance. Four pieces are set to make life a whole lot easier for players with smaller hands – a category that includes even women and children.

The Model 555 is a half scale six-stringer while the 580 and 610 are both 3/4-scale instruments. The 630 is the largest in this range, weighing in as a 7/8 scale classical guitar.
Seagull
Smaller Seagull

ANOTHER fine guitar emerges from the LaSiDo stables, this one from the famed Seagull line and part of the M range – the MJM6 Mini Jumbo. It's the same size as the legendary S6, but the looks and tone are quite different. The MJM6 contours are a tad different as well – it's larger across the upper bout and narrower across the waist.

A solid spruce top, laminated mahogany back and sides, mahogany neck (with a double action truss-rod), rosewood fingerboard, TUSQ nut and saddle and nitrocellulose lacquer finish are what you get for your model. Optional L.R. Baggs Element electronics are available too.

Fishman
Tone anglers galore

Fishman certainly knows its sound and that means you'll get an 8-inch woofer, 4-inch polypropylene midrange driver and two neodynium soft dome tweeters in your Loudbox. This tri-amped design also features an active crossover.

Tonal tweaks on this amp include shelving EQ for the bass and treble frequencies and resonant style for the midrange and brilliant. Feedback busting features include a phase switch and notch filter. Yup, this manufacturer knows how annoying those howls can be. Analogue reverb, an effects loop and a balanced output complete this superb acoustic amplifier.
